Gueorguieva’s work appears in several public and private collections, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Von Liebig Art Center in Naples, Florida. Her art has been reviewed in Artslant, Art Haps, Art Forum, Los Angeles Times, and Art in America.
Gueorguieva is the recipient of the Orange County Contemporary Collectors Fellowship for 2012, the California Community Foundation mid-career fellowship for 2010, and the Pollock-Krasner Grant for 2006. She also received the Artist Residency Scholarship at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2005).
Iva Gueorguieva makes large-scale abstract paintings that feature a frenetic mix of overlapping collage, line, shape, and color. At times, figures, fragments of architecture, or mysterious machines seem to emerge from the mix, conjuring an enigmatic narrative or elusive memory. In a 2011 series of paintings inspired by the stories of a former fighter pilot, the chaotic, wild energy of Gueorguieva’s compositions suggests adrenaline and pulsing anxiety, her bold palette of reds evoking blood and the body despite total abstraction.
She received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2000.
