With humble beginnings in Mysore, Bhuvanesh Gowda’s sculptural journey has encompassed a multitudinal language of expression. From plaster and cement, to cloth and wood. Born in the 70’s in Karnataka, Gowda has studied Fine Art at the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore in 1999 and completed his Masters in Fine Arts at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in 2003. He started with group shows at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi and continued to exhibit in Mumbai, Kochi, Vadodra, Hyderabad in various group shows.
He has also participated in residences all over India, with the most notable ones at the at State University for Performing & Visual Arts in Rohtak and by Nirmithi Kendra Udupi in Manipal. A voracious reader of philosophy, mysticism, physics and mathematical principles, his treatment of material like wood, cloth, plaster, cement reflects his literary repertoire and explores the connections between them. Gowda has been engaging the viewer in seeing the hidden stories layered in each work. With his journey of connecting back with his ancestral lineage of carpentry and farming, he has organically created a repertoire which finds a resonance with a global audience. Over the last decade, his solo exhibitions have been growing in Mumbai. Otah Protah, his recent solo at Chemould Prescott Road in 2016, heralded his prowess as an artist being recognised nationally and internationally. He received recognition through international media houses like the Financial Times and The Blouin ArtInfo. His work has been well received in art fairs like India Art Fair and Art Basel Hong Kong, and has been recently been acquired by national and international collections as well.
